The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN THE KERN RIVER VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY?

By joining you will become a member of the largest rural historical society in California.  Size is important because with an all-volunteer staff....NO PAID PERSONNEL....we direct all dues and donations to school programs, scolarships, libraries, and educational programs for adults.  The cost of operating the Society and Museum is paid for by income at the Museum.  A reserve fund protects us for emergencies, repairs, and replacement of equipment.

SOCIETY OBJECTIVES.....The Society is unique in California in that we provide grants to schools and libraries for projects promoting local and Western history.  In addition we award up to six $500 scholarships to local high school seniors annually. 

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU....A monthly Saddlebag newsletter, monthly docent led field trips of historical interest, social events and monthly programs.  And the opportunity to meet some really nice people.

BECOME A PASSIVE MEMBER....this means you may not have time for our many activities but that you do want to support educational programs for youth and adults.  We have many such folks in the Valley and all over Southern California.  (Total members...819)

BECOME AN ACTIVE MEMBER....This means that you have an interest in serving on one of many committees, volunteering for work parties, or better yet, serving for 3 hours a month on our Museum staff.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DUES DOLLARS?....They do not go to people, or stamps, or office supplies.  THEY FUND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
